A Challenge

August 7, 2008

It’s funny. As someone with a crippling fear of failure (that would be me, by the way), who often finds herself avoiding certain situations and activities for fear of making mistakes and failing (how silly this sounds when said outloud), I find myself able to challenge myself through knitting constantly without this phobia biting at my heels.

The first big challenge for me was double pointed needles. All it took was an hour, a set of size 7 dpn and a skein of Plymouth Encore, and the Fetching pattern from Knitty and I was soaring around the cuff of a pair of fingerless mitts.

The second challenge was socks. Now that I had circular knitting down and a good basic ribbed sock pattern, I was able to take a skein of OnLine Supersock and watch in amazement as I turned a heel with the first try.

And on and on.

The latest challenge, as indicated by the previous post, is twofold. Lace and using a chart. And you know what, it’s going swimmingly…

Wading into charted waters

I’m already ready to start color 2, and I’ve packed the third color in my panniers too, just in case I get that far on my weekend bicycle touring/camping trip that I embark on this evening.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Good luck to you with the lace.. I am still at beginning stages of lace. I see you also have life lines.. I don’t think I can live without them. 😀

Good for you at pushing yourself with knitting!

Again, we are doppelgangers with the fear of failure. But with knitting I’m completely fearless because I can always frog back! And once I discovered how to make a lifeline, I was in heaven. If you don’t know about lifelines (which will definitely help with lace type patterns), it’s here in the fixing mistakes section:

By the way, using unwaxed dental floss is the PERFECT lifeline material…
